Pro Engineer Config

Pro Engineer uses various configuration files when it is launched to give you the look, feel, and functions you desire. The first is a config.pro, this is a Text file that stores info such as paths, mapkeys, specific cofiguration settings for your install of Pro/E. Next is the config.win, this is a file that controls more of the look of Pro/E such as what Icons show up and what menus and location of these icons and menus. And the final (kind of) is the config.sup file, this is very similar to the config.pro in what it can do, but this one is written by the Systems Admin and can not be over ridden by other config files. Config.sup file is located normally in your Pro E loadpoint/text directory and is loaded every time you fire the software up; most of the time things that are standard in a corporate environment are placed here so users can't simply change their personal config and not use corporate standards.

This next part will cover locations and orders of the use of config file used by Pro Engineer:

The first place PTC has Pro Enginner look for config settings is the loadpoint/text directory, you can have any of the three configuration files listed and they will all be read.

The second place Pro/E looks is your login directory (MyDocuments folder) only the config.pro and config.win can be here.

The third place Pro looks is when you fire up Pro Engineer from the icon there is a path in the icon's properties that is "start in" and this can be set to a directory that contains a config.pro, config.win and other configuration files to be talked about at a later time, you can have different "start in" directories if you happen to work for multiple customers that all have their own configurations. this just so happens to be the third and last place that Pro/e looks so things in this will over write things that are placed in the other two locations (but not the config.sup).

This is mainly useful if you use Pro Enginner as a contractor working with multiple customers, once you get into Pro/Intralink some of this changes as far as what steps to take to be able to load multiple setups. If anyone needs tips on this feel free to comment and we here at Proe Guru can give you some pointers on getting Pro Engineer setup to run with or without Intralink.
